Depending on how long, thick, fine, or wavy your hair is, a decent comb-out can take up to three hours. Prepare an activity for your child ahead of time. To keep their children occupied, many parents allow them to play handheld games or watch videos. Audio novels are also a good option.

Wet the hair, apply conditioner or detangler, then comb out the tangles with an ordinary comb before beginning the lice comb-out. Some people think that slathering their hair in goopy, white conditioner makes combing easier, slows the lice, and makes them easier to spot on the comb.

What is the best way to do a thorough comb-out?

Part your child's hair in half and clip one part up to keep it out of the way.

Pick up one little segment of hair, around the width of your lice comb, on the loose side. To catch the nits (lice eggs), start at the scalp, where they are placed and hatch only a fraction of an inch from the scalp.

Comb each segment in a number of different directions (up, down, left, right).

Pull the comb through the hair all the way to the ends. After pulling the comb through the hair, you may notice lice on it.

After each stroke, fling the comb's teeth into a bowl, immerse it in soapy water, or wipe it with a paper towel.

Continue combing each region until the comb is clean (no lice or nits).

Unclip the hair and rinse away the conditioner once you've finished the entire head. To clean the comb and clips, soak them in hot, soapy water. The clothes you and your child wore during the comb-out should be washed.
