Nix Dermal Cream Permethrin Cream 5% (w/w) 30g

This Nix medication is used to treat scabies, a condition caused by small insects called mites that infest and irritate one's skin.

Permethrin cream is a common treatment for scabies and head lice. This cream can be applied to the skin as well as clothing. In some cases, the treatment only needs to last one day. Permethrin is not recommended for those who have had a reaction to it in the past. For those that do not have an allergic reaction, permethrin creams can be used on other parts of their body not infected by scabies or other infestation. Permethrin belongs to a class of drugs known as pyrethrins. Permethrin works by paralyzing and killing the mites and their eggs.*

How does permethrin work?

Permethrin can affect insects if they touch or consume it. Permethrin affects the nervous system of insects, causing muscle spasms, paralysis, and death. Permethrin is more toxic to insects than it is to humans. This is because insects do not break it down as quickly as humans.

Permethrin is a potent muscle and nerve toxin for parasites. As a fat-soluble substance, the active ingredient can penetrate the insects' chitin armor well and get into their central nervous system.

There the insecticide opens the sodium channels (ion channels) in the membrane of the nerve cells (neurons) for several seconds. This lowers the neurons' excitation threshold, which results in uncontrolled nerve impulses.

In addition, the nerve cells release more messenger substances (neurotransmitters), which leads to coordination disorders, symptoms of paralysis, and ultimately to the death of the insect.

If the dose is too low, the insects can use enzymes to break down the active ingredient and then recover. However, the addition of special substances (such as piperonyl butoxide) can prevent enzymatic degradation.

Permethrin works selectively against insects such as lice, ticks, fleas, mites, and mosquitoes, but is not toxic to humans. The reason for this is the different structure of the sodium channels between humans and insects.
